Tòfol Martínez showed very early his passion for blues and black music in general. He set up his first band at age fifteen! Since then it has many festivals, albums, concerts, collaborations, etc. (in 2015/2016 he participated as an actor and musician in the theatre piece La puerta de al lado, by acclaimed Sergio Peris-Mencheta), always with the same enthusiasm and the same desire to play. With the Tòfol Martinez Blues Band, his current band, he recorded the albums Hallelujah (2011), 1979 (2014) and No Panic! (2017), performing concerts throughout Europe.
In his concerts he usually revisits not only the themes of his albums (including From Tossa to Bentayga, his particular collaboration of 2012 with Alberto Gulias, presented in concert at the BBBF 2013), but also several blues classics, soul music and funk. At the BB Blues Fest concert Tòfol will be accompanied by the Portuguese bassist Hugo Ganhão.
Ian Siegal is one of the leading figures in the current panorama of British blues. The singer, composer, guitarist and, above all, storyteller, represents the bridge between British tradition and the deep roots of American music, being one of the few that achieve the same level of recognition on both sides of the Atlantic.
One of the first to see his name in the British Blues Hall of Fame, he collects nominations and awards at the Blues Awards USA and the British Blues Awards. The albums Man & Guitar (2014) and Broadside (2019) were considered “Blues Album of the year” by Mojo magazine. An adventurous musician, he has an unfairly unknown pearl on the album Broadway in Satin: Billie Holiday Revisited (2009), fruit of his collaboration with the French L’Orchestre National de Jazz
Opens the first night of the Auditorium of the seventh edition of the BB Blues Fest, in a return to the stage where he made the Warm-Up of the festival in 2015, in the same acoustic format.
Directly from Memphis, Tennessee, one of the most interesting and original blues musicians of recent years, in his absolute debut in Portugal. John Németh is one of the most recognized interpreters and harmonicists of the American blues and soul scene. Dynamic and creative, with her “lavish” voice, he consolidated his own style, breaking down barriers between different styles and genres.
Influenced by Al Green, Lowel Fulson or Jimmy McCracklin, has already won some important awards: Soul Blues Album of the Year (2015), Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year (2014), Living Blues Vocalist of the year (2010), Blues Blast Magazine Best Debut Artist Recording and the Sean Costello Rising Star Award.
He performs at the BB Blues Fest with his American band, to close the first day of June, at a contemporary blues concert that is expected to be exciting.
Big fish of the Portuguese musical scene and considered the new revelation of southern European blues, Frankie Chávez is also one of the musicians of the particular ‘universe’ of the producer and drummer Fred Ferreira (Buraka Som Sistema, Orelha Negra, Banda do Mar and a long etc., which includes the “barreirenses” Nicotine’s Orchestra).
Frankie Chavez uses different guitars (including Portuguese guitar), with different tunings, custom drums and a wide range of effects pedals, creating a rich and strong sound, in which nothing is out of place. The result is a blues / folk / rock style, influenced by Robert Johnson, Jimmy Hendrix, Kelly Joe Phelps or Ry Cooder.
On the main stage of the BB Blues Fest in a unique concert in acoustic format and with many surprises.
The most important voice of the Texas blues, Diunna Greenleaf has sung with Bob Margolin, Keb Mo, Willie “Pinetop” Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, James Cotton, Carrie Bell, Big Bill Morganfield, Smoking Joe Kubek or B 'Nois King, among others. Winner of the 2017 Koko Taylor Award, an award attributed by The Blues Foundation.
With roots in the gospel, Diunna’s voice is one of the best kept secrets of the blues. Demanding and perfectionist in the recordings, she has only three recorded albums, including the seminal Cotton Field to Coffee House (2007); her most recent is 2011, Trying to Hold On. While the most attentive music lovers await her next recording with expectation, the BB Blues Fest has the honor of hosting an exciting concert, a moment of exploration of the best and deepest of American black music.
Hokum is a particular type of blues - humorous songs that use analogies or euphemisms to address sexual themes … This tropo goes back to the first blues recordings and is used occasionally in modern American blues and blues rock. And so the lisboetas João Afonso, Luís Ferreira, Fernando Gomes and Octavio Rodrigues, the Hokum Blues, propose a mix Hendrix, Gary Clark Jr. or Stevie Ray Vaughan. Under the motto DROPS THE BLUE NOTE MAKES ORGASM.
The Smokestackers emerged from a conversation in a studio and from a common ground - the blues. The duo formed by João Belchior and Diogo Mão de Ferro represents the image and feeling of the genre, in a repertoire that includes the traditional and most current songs. In acoustic format, with some notes of slide guitar and a harmonica, as well as voices that sing those lyrics that are passed from generation to generation. To dance.
Them Sacks’a Potatoes is a union of musicians of different musical projects around the spiritual home of all, the blues, with the purpose of recreating the roots of the mother music of popular music (and not only) of the 20th century . Sara Badalo (Sam Alone & the Gravediggers, Storm & the Sun), Gito Lima (The Soaked Lamb), Miguel Lima (The Soaked Lamb), «our» Fast Eddie Nelson, João Oliveira (Blues Fever Band, Guillande) and Selmer Rodrigues (The Jukeboxers).
The Ramblers are gipsy-bluers lisboetas, formed in February 2007 and inspired by an old song by the Rolling Stones, “Midnight Rambler”.
Throughout the last 10 years they have performed countless concerts, including the opening of concerts by BB King (Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame), Ian Siegal (UK Blues Hall of Fame), Carvin Jones (Guitarrist Magazine 50 Greatest Blues Guitarists of All-Time) or Blasted Mechanism (“Best Portuguese Act” - MTV Europe Music Awards). In 2018, the “Pirates of the Blues” prepare a new studio work to be distributed online through the Spanish platform EMU bands, for having been in the Top3 Iberian contest of the SubeRock Festival in San Vicente de Alcantara (Spain).
Rosie, Richards and Lou are accompanied live by the drummer Alexandre Antunes (Virgul, Carlão, João Gil, Da Chick) and the saxophonist André Lourenço (Farra Fanfarra). To extend the afternoon.
